“A partire dal 1973, quando l'opera letteraria di Aleksandr Solzˇenicyn ha fatto conoscere al mondo la ferocia dei campi di concentramento sovietici, e in particolare dopo il crollo dell'Unione Sovietica, molti documenti tenuti fino allora segreti o nascosti hanno gettato nuova luce sul ruolo dei Gulag: spietato strumento repressivo, ma anche potente risorsa economica per Stalin che fece del lavoro coatto la base dell'industrializzazione a tappe forzate del Paese. È quanto emerge dall'accurata ricostruzione di Anne Applebaum, che rievoca in modo completo e documentatissimo il sistema sovietico dei campi, dalla nascita, subito dopo la Rivoluzione d'ottobre, all'enorme espansione durante il Grande terrore staliniano, al suo smantellamento, negli anni Ottanta della glasnost' gorbacioviana. Ma soprattutto racconta, in base a testimonianze di sopravvissuti, lettere e memoriali, la vita di prigionieri, guardie, comandanti, facendo rivivere quello che fu un "paese nel paese", una civiltà sommersa nell'estremo nord della Russia con leggi, usanze, una lingua, un'etica proprie.
